The Quaker Commitment

Penn is taking bold steps to increase affordability for undergraduates

Penn's Commitment to Affordability

Penn recognizes that financial stress should never stand in the way of well-earned opportunity, and our promise is clear: once a student is admitted, we will make Penn affordable and provide the resources for that student to thrive. The Quaker Commitment reaffirms this longstanding vow to our students and families and expands the reach of Penn’s financial aid program in new and bold ways.

We invite you to hear directly from some of our talented scholars and from Penn's President, J. Larry Jameson, MD, PhD, on the impact of financial aid at Penn.

The Quaker Commitment Explained

The Quaker Commitment distinguishes Penn, expanding support for middle- and lower-income families and upholding the most generous financial aid policies in higher education by:

  • Meeting 100% of demonstrated need for all aided undergraduates, with grant-based, no-loan financial aid packages.
  • Eliminating home equity from our financial aid calculations, a rare policy that acknowledges the difficulty of converting homeownership into tuition payments.
  • Guaranteeing that students from middle income backgrounds (family income from $75,001-$200,000) receive scholarships that cover at least full tuition.
  • Supporting our Penn First Plus Highly Aided undergraduates – those from families reporting up to $75,000 in income – with financial aid packages that fully cover tuition, fees, housing, and dining as well as access to summer internship, research and academic course funding, free laptops and health insurance.

These policies represent our enduring promise to educate the brightest minds, regardless of financial means, and to equip scholars with the tools to succeed at Penn and beyond – free from the burden of insurmountable debt. This would not be possible without the generous philanthropy of our donors.
